Every one of these numbers is a driver who chose not to stop, where our kids walk to school. A driver hit me in a crosswalk, and it changed my family's life forever. It's happening all across Virginia, and we owe it to every kid to make our streets safer.”

This is a problem we can fix

The behavior is predictable. That's why it can be changed.

Drivers routinely fail to stop or yield at these locations, in part because they've rarely carried a consequence. A new VA Pedestrian Safety Law went into effect on July 1, 2026, enabling us to address this problem directly. Now it's on us to act.

How we fix this

Effective July 1, 2026 Virginia has a new Pedestrian Safety Law (SB84) that makes it one of the first states in the country to permit automated enforcement at stop signs and crosswalks in and around school zones. The exact places this study identified as presenting the highest risk.

It carries clear requirements for signage, transparency, privacy and the use of revenue. And it gives communities a real, practical tool aimed squarely at unsafe driving behavior.
CASE STUDY

It actually works.

After passing similar legislation, Maryland measured a significant drop in dangerous driving.
We’re seeing that automated pedestrian safety programs change dangerous driving behavior. That makes our roads safer and saves lives.”

Fewer violations are just the start. We’re making preventable bad endings go away; crashes, injuries, and deaths."
Dan Franklin
Chief of Police, Morningside, MD
MD had new school zone stop sign programs up and running within days, with results that came fast and keep improving.”

Take the next step

Together we can fix this.
